Nintendo, a Japanese consumer electronics is the world’s largest video game company by revenue. After trying its hands in several businesses, Nintendo entered the gaming industry in the year 1974 by getting the distribution rights for Magnavox video game console.Nintendo started producing its own hardware in the year 1977. In 1981 the release of the super successful game Donkey kong, made Nintendo a major player of the gaming industry. Soon in 1983, Nintendo launched the family computer (‘famicom’) also known as Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) home video game console. This was an 8-bit third generation gaming console.
The successor of NES was SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). This was 16-bit fourth generation gaming console. Its main rival was Sega Mega Drive. The console war between Sega and Nintendo continued. In 1996, with Sega and Sony taking away a lot of market share of Nintendo, it released its third gaming console Nintendo 64 (N64). It was named for its 64 bit Central processing Unit (CPU).It featured 3D graphics and a multiplayer support for up to four players. It was Nintendo’s Last gaming console to use ROM cartridges to store games. It was a fifth generation gaming console and competed with Sony's Playstation. The famous Super Mario 64 was a part of the launch games of Nintendo 64.
Nintendo Gamcube (NGC) was the successor of N64 and was released by Nintendo in 2001. This was a 6th generation gaming console and was a competition to Sony’s PlayStation 2, Microsoft’s Xbox and Sega’s Dreamcast. NGC used miniDVDs (Optical Discs) to store games instead of the cartridges. Also it was the first console from Nintendo that supported online gaming.
NGC’s Successor Nintendo Wii was released in the year 2006 and competed directly with the Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. All the three belonged to the seventh generation of the gaming Consoles. Wii had various cool features such as Wii Remote – primary wireless controller that can be used as a pointing device and can detect movement in 3D. Another noticeable feature was the WiiConnect24 feature through which Wii was able to receive messages and updates from the internet in the standby mode as well.
In 2012 the successor to the Wii was released and it was named Wii U. It is the first member of the eighth generation of video games and hence will compete with the other members of the club like the Playstation 4 and Xbox One which are expected to be released in the last quarter of 2013. Wii U supports high – definition graphics and produces video quality of up to 1080px. It has 2 GB of RAM and half of which is dedicated to Operating System of the Console.
In the Portable category of the gaming consoles Nintendo 3DS or simply 3DS is a major player from the Nintendo club. Released in the year 2011 it is a successor of the Nintendo DS. It is capable of producing stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses. 3DS is a competitor of Sony PlayStation Vita. In mid 2012 Nintendo released the modified version of 3DS called 3DS XL with a screen size 90% larger than that of the original.
