Kinect is a motion sensing input device by Microsoft for Xbox 360 video gaming console and Window’s PC’s. With Kinect users can interact with the Xbox 360 console through a natural user interface using gestures and voice commands thus eliminating the need of a game controller.
Launched in Nov 2010 the Kinect claimed to hold the Guinness World Record of being the fastest selling consumer electronics device.
Kinect has a direct competition with the Wii Remote Plus for the Nintendo’s Wii and PlayStation Move with PlayStation Eye motion controllers for Sony’s PlayStation 3 home consoles.
The technology behind Kinect uses an infrared projector and camera and a special microchip to record the movement of objects in three dimension. This system named Light Coding is a three dimensional scanner system and it employs a variant of image based 3D reconstruction.
