How to select non adjacent cells in excel


Introduction :

In our job of using excel there can't be a single day that goes without selecting cells. Selecting cells is unavoidable, no matter what task we are performing, be it data entry, deleting data,copying and pasting values, merging excel cells, combining values in cells, formatting etc. we will have to select cells in some form or the other. At times we'll have to select adjacent cells i.e. cells that are right next to each other, while at other times we might have to select non-adjacent cells i.e. cells that have other cells in between them. In this tutorial we'll learn different methods to select cells both by using keyboard and mouse to select adjacent as well as non-adjacent cells.

 

Method 1 : Select Non adjacent and adjacent cells Using both keyboard and Mouse

Step 1 :

Click the first cell you want to select using your mouse.

Step 2 :

Press the Ctrl key on your keyboard and hold the key.

Step 3 :

One by one click on the remaining cells that you want to select.

Step 4 :

Once all the cells that you want to select are highlighted, release the Ctrl key. Now you have all the desired cells selected. If you want to add more cells to the selection, press and hold the Ctrl key again and click on the new cells that you want to add.

 

Note # : Do not click anywhere else with the mouse till you complete your action with the selection. This will deselect the cells.

 

 

 

Method 2 : Select non-adjacent cells in excel using only the keyboard.

Step 1 :

Move the cursor to the first cell that you want to select.

Step 2 :

Press and release the F8 key. This will turn on the extended mode and the current cell will get selected.

Step 3 :

Press and release the Shift + F8 keys. This will turn off the extended mode. The current cell will remain selected.

Step 4 :

Move the cursor to the next cell that you want select. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to do this.

Step 5 :

Press and release F8. Now the current cell will be added to the selection.

Step 6 :

Press and release Shift + F8 keys.

Step 7 :

Repeat the steps above till you have all the desired cells selected.

 

 

Method 3 :  Select Non adjacent and adjacent cells using only the keyboard.

Step 1 :

Move the cursor to the first cell that you want to select.

Step 2 :

Press and release the F8 key. This will turn on the extended mode and the current cell will get selected.

Step 3 :

Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor to the other adjacent cells that you want to select. These cells will also get selected.

Step 4 :

Press and release the Shift + F8 keys. This will turn off the extended mode.

Step 5 :

Move the cursor to the next cell that you want select. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to do this.

Step 6 :

Press and release F8. Now the current cell will be added to the selection.

Step 7 :

Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor to the other adjacent cells that you want to select. These cells will also get selected.

Step 8 :

Press and release Shift + F8 keys.

Step 9 :

Repeat the steps above till you have all the desired cells selected.
